Just like fellow new signing Jens Stage, Oliver Burke joined the club just before the training camp in Austria. Werder’s new number 9 talked about his targets and his start to life with SVW during an interview at the training camp.
Burke was quick to praise the settings in Zillertal. “I’ve been here for two days now and I had a training camp with Leipzig in Austria too. I think it’s really nice here and the pitch is great to train on. The weather keeps changing, but that’s not a problem for me,” joked the Scotland international. “The team have welcomed me and I’m looking forward to getting to know them all better,” he explained on Saturday.
‘Burkey’, as he likes to be called, said the decision to move to Bremen was an easy one. “Werder Bremen is a club with great tradition. They have a great stadium and amazing fans. I watched a few videos from last season and that just backed my up decision,” stated Burke. “Bremen were really good last season. We now need to use that momentum gained from the promotion to stay in the Bundesliga.”
Burke’s aim is to help the team as much as he can by performing well on the pitch. “I want to show what kind of a player I am by using my strengths. I’ve always been really quick and I want to assist the team as best I can. That means both scoring and creating goals.”
The attacker knows that it won’t be an easy year back in the Bundesliga, but still has confidence in himself. “The more you play, the better you get. That’s my biggest aim aside from helping the team. I’ll probably be used as a striker, though I like playing out wide too. I’m happy doing both, as long as I’m in an attacking position. I’m here to play as much as possible, however I know I will have to work hard. I will have to impress everyone and I’ll need to fight for my place in the side.”
Burke, who has already played in England, Scotland, Spain and Germany, revealed that he wants to stay in Bremen for a long time. “I want to learn German as quickly as I can. You want to be able to chat to your teammates away from the pitch. You will also play better together if you get on well,” he added. “I’m definitely here to stay for a long time.”
