After the fixture with local rivals FC St. Pauli last week, SV Werder will now travel to Nürnberg to play on Friday, 5th November at 18:30 CET. Clemens Fritz is well aware of how tough their opponents are: “I’m expecting a really intense game. They are very aggressive and don’t allow you a moment’s respite, which is something we have to be prepared for. We need to be up for it and transition well when we lose the ball. It’s critical that we are aggressive and play with confidence,” said the head of scouting and professional football on Wednesday.

Team news: Although Ömer Toprak, Christian Groß and Marvin Ducksch have been back in team training, it remains to be seen how they cope with the added strain. Felix Agu could not train due to a calf problem. Leonardo Bittencourt has recovered from illness and could be in contention for a starting place.

The head coach on the match: “Nürnberg defend well and with aggression, are quick to prevent counter attacks and defend on the front-foot,” said Markus Anfang. Werder don’t have to hide, however. “We are still the side who concede the fewest shots on goal and create the most. We have the quantity but need to work on the quality. Finally, however, you have to say that Nürnberg are very good defensively and it is tough to score goals against them,” said the Werder coach at Wednesday’s press conference.

Last time out: After 64 clashes in the Bundesliga and a meeting in the DFB-Pokal in 1995, 1. FC Nürnberg and SV Werder Bremen will now play each other in Bundesliga 2. The Green-Whites have only won once in the last eight competitive meetings between the two sides (5D, 2L). The last fixtures took place in the 2018/19 season, both of which ended 1-1.

Max-Morlock Stadion a fortress: FCN are unbeaten in 12 home matches at home in Bundesliga 2, winning six and drawing six in that time. Moreover, 1. FC Nürnberg have only conceded once at home in the league this season. They have kept clean sheets in their last three home matches.

Familiar faces: After coming through the youth system at Bremen, Niclas Füllkrug moved to FCN in 2014 after a year-long loan at SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Nürnberg’s fiercest rivals. He scored 17 goals in two years and 54 second division matches for Friday’s opponents before moving back to his home town to play for Hannover 96.
