Despite only joining SV Werder in August, many Bremen fans cannot imagine a life without Marvin Ducksch. He’s had the most goal involvements of any Werder player so far this season (16 goals, nine assists) and he’s a big reason behind why Werder are sat at the top of the league. “I’m happy here and really very pleased. Everything’s going great and I feel settled. We’ve got a great team, a super coaching staff, amazing fans and a wonderful stadium, all of which is very important for a player like me,” explained the 28-year-old at a press conference on Wednesday.

However, the attacker is trying to not think too hard about the league standings, which couldn’t be any tighter at the minute. “I’m not thinking about it so much, because we simply need to keep doing our job, no matter how close it is at the top of the table. You see just what can change with every matchday. But, if you simply do your job, then what you want to happen probably will,” explained Ducksch before casting his mind back to Werder’s patchy first half of the season: “No one would have expected this two or three months ago, which shows just how tight this league is and that truly anything can happen.” The team climbed their way back up to the top through consistent performances and getting used to the strategy and tactics. Fixtures against fellow top sides St. Pauli, Schalke and Nürnberg lie in wait for the Green-Whites, and Werder are going to have to prove their worth. “We’ve still got six games left this season and we’ve got three big, big matches coming up first against top opposition which we absolutely want to win, and we’ll go into each of these matches with that intention,” added Ducksch.

Taking a personal record in his stride

Werder’s next match is on Saturday, 9th April away to third-placed FC St. Pauli (13:30 CEST), who are just one point behind SVW. Werder’s number 7 is expecting a “really good match” at the Millerntor. “St- Pauli are clearly one of the strongest sides in the league. They play attacking football just like us,” described Ducksch, who is confident in his ability to perform well against top opposition. “You can see from the last few games just how focused we are and that we absolutely want to win. We’ll need to do the same going into the St. Pauli game. We’re aware that they have several quality players, but we also know our strengths. We’ll need to bring these strengths into the game on Saturday,” commented the striker.

Ducksch will be returning to a former side on Saturday, after making 12 appearances for FSCP in 2016/17 and scoring two goals. He’s shown himself to be a bit more clinical when playing against the ‘Boys in Brown’, with four goals in six matches vs. St. Pauli. “Of course I’m aware I do pretty well when playing against former employers and that there’s a good chance that I’ll score on Saturday. If I can help my current side in any way on Saturday, then I’ll do that,” said Ducksch with a grin, who is close to equalling a personal record of scoring 18 goals in a single season. However, that isn’t something which is too important to him. “I’d like to win football matches, regardless of whether I score or not. I want us to stay at the top of the table and that’s my attitude going into matches. Now that I’m so close to equalling my personal record, I’d like to achieve that as well. However, it’s not my main focus and it’s not my priority,” concluded Ducksch.
