SV Werder Bremen suspended Niclas Füllkrug from training on Monday for three days, meaning he won’t take part in training on Wednesday afternoon. The forward was informed of the decision in a meeting on Monday. The reason behind it was a confrontation between Füllkrug and Clemens Fritz, head of scouting and professional football at Werder, after the away game at Darmstadt 98. The attacker was verbally abusive towards SVW’s former captain on several occasions.
“We couldn’t tolerate this behaviour, which is why we decided to release him from duty for three days,” explained sporting director Frank Baumann. He added: “Niclas will also donate an already agreed amount of money to social projects which we work with closely as a club.”
“I have apologised to Clemens, the coaching team and the rest of the players. I crossed a line that you cannot cross between players and staff. This simply cannot happen,” said Füllkrug.
The staff and Füllkrug will sit down together again on Thursday to discuss his future. “We made the decision to give Niclas these three days to reflect on his behaviour on Sunday. We expect to see a positive reaction from him”, summed up Frank Baumann.
