SV Werder Bremen will take on VfL Osnabrück in the first round of the DFB-Pokal after the draw was made on Sunday evening. The game will be played two weeks after Bundesliga 2 begins between 6th and 9th August – an exact time will be announced in the coming weeks.

This will be the 79th season of the DFB-Pokal. The final will take place as usual in Berlin’s Olympiastadion on 21st May 2022. The first round is a week before the start of the Bundesliga (13th August) and two weeks after Bundesliga 2 kicks off (23rd July).

Reactions to the draw:

Frank Baumann: “A derby against a club like VfL in the first round is no easy draw. We’re hoping there will be a good atmosphere at the Bremer Brücke and we will try to reach the next round.”

Markus Anfang: “Games in Osnabrück are never easy and this one against VfL will be anything but a walkover for my team, we have to make that clear. Nevertheless, our aim has to be to reach the second round.”

Felix Agu: “I’m obviously really pleased about this draw and I’m excited to see some old faces and their fans at the Bremer Brücke again. I will be playing against old teammates and friends, so it’s the perfect draw. Ultimately, the most important thing is to get through though and I will have to put my friendships and connection to VfL aside for that game.”

Niklas Schmidt: “Playing where I did for the last two years will be really special, of course. I’m looking forward to the game and to seeing some old faces quicker than I’d expected.”

Christian Groß: “It’s an interesting draw. Derbies are always special and having played there for four years, I know how difficult games there can be. Despite that, I’m convinced that we can show we play in a higher league and that we will make the next round.”
