Head coach Florian Kohfeldt is expecting one thing in particular from his team for Saturday’s trip to Frankfurt - enthusiasm out on the pitch. “Under no circumstances should anyone get the feeling that we’re losing energy or letting ourselves slip,” he said at the digital pre-match press conference on Thursday. He was referring to the fact that all Bundesliga matches in November will be played behind closed doors and will therefore lack the passion and energy brought by fans, a fact that became clear on Wednesday as the German government tightened corona measures as a result of the rising infection rates nationwide. Unfortunately this will also affect tomorrow’s trip to Frankfurt, which kicks off at 15:30 CET.

The squad: In contrast to Werder’s last game on the road when Florian Kohfeldt had a full squad at his disposal, the head coach will have to do without a number of players for the trip to Hesse. Felix Agu will miss the match as he is still in quarantine following a positive corona test, while Davie Selke continues to recover from a groin problem. Niclas Füllkrug, the Green-Whites’ top scorer so far this season, suffered a muscle injury in his calf in the home draw to TSG Hoffenheim and will sit out the game. Ludwig Augustinsson and Patrick Erras, who have both had thigh issues, have been back in individual training this week but are not yet match fit. Meanwhile, Yuya Osako has been given the all-clear to return to the match squad following the knock that saw him substituted last weekend and will travel to Frankfurt.

Playing a physical game with courage

The head coach on the match: Despite lacking a number of players due to injury, Florian Kohfeldt has full confidence in his team. “We have several players who are dangerous in front of goal and overall, I’d say we’re an unpleasant team to come up against.” He is particularly looking forward to the game against Frankfurt, “because just like them, we’ve started the season well with eight points from five games,” said Kohfeldt. “We want to show that the team is hungry for the win. The right mentality is key to beating Eintracht, as they have such a well-drilled team. They’re tactically flexible, good at pressing, and have some very high quality players in attack,” added Kohfeldt as he praised Adi Hütter’s side. “There will be no rest and we don’t expect either team to have the ball for long in the game. Both teams are going to have to prepare themselves for a physically demanding game.” In spite of this, the 38-year-old admits that he enjoys coming up against the Eagles: “I always enjoy the games against Eintracht, because it’s always a feisty game.” Speaking about the current coronavirus situation in Germany and the partial lockdown decided on Wednesday, Kohfeldt stated: “The circumstances at Werder Bremen are not easy, but we count ourselves lucky that we’re still able to play - that's a privilege.”

The most recent meeting: When SV Werder and Eintracht last met in the Bundesliga, the Green-Whites were in the middle of last season’s relegation fight. The game at the wohninvest WESERSTADION on the 3rd June finished as a decisive win for Eintracht, as the team from Hesse came away 3-0 winners. SVW and Adi Hütter’s team exchanged some early blows throughout a relatively even first half, but André Silva fired Frankfurt into the lead on the hour mark before Stefan Ilsanker added two more in the 81st and 90th minutes to ensure three points for the Eagles. Although the result did not reflect the overall balance of the game, the victory was ultimately a deserved one for Werder. The reverse fixture from before Christmas will give hope for Kohfeldt’s team however, as Milot Rashica’s 90th minute equaliser earned Werder a point in the 2-2 draw in Frankfurt.

A clash between home and away specialists

A close record: SV Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt have played exactly 100 Bundesliga games against each other. The Green-Whites have won 42 of these encounters and the Eagles have won 36, with the points shared on 22 occasions. This relatively balanced record of results adds to the sense of anticipation ahead of Saturday’s game. In addition to this, Werder have performed strongly on the road in recent times, having only lost one of the last nine competitive matches on the road. However, Eintracht remained unbeaten against Werder last season in both the league and the cup. The last time Werder won three points against the side from Hesse was on 1st September 2018.

On the game: In the table, SV Werder and Eintracht Frankfurt are equal with eight points after five games in 7th and 8th position. While Kohfeldt’s team earned a 1-1 draw at home to Hoffenheim last time out, Adi Hütter’s side suffered a 5-0 defeat to FC Bayern, the biggest defeat in the head coach's term of office. However, given the current form of the incumbent Bundesliga champions, this result should not be taken out of context. Furthermore, Eintracht are unbeaten in their last four Bundesliga home games with three wins and a draw. Saturday promises an interesting encounter away specialists Werder travel to meet Frankfurt in their fortress.
