The search for a new head coach is over: Markus Anfang will take the reins at SV Werder Bremen, after the 46-year-old came to an agreement with the club. Anfang will leave his post at divisional rivals Darmstadt 98, where he had a contract until 2022. Werder Bremen and the ‘Lilien’ have come to an agreement for the transfer, but no further details will be disclosed.

“After an intensive selection process, we are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with Markus. He has shown in his previous positions as head coach in professional football that he can achieve a lot from a variety of circumstances, that he can demonstrate a winning mentality and develop a team. In addition, he already has experience in the challenging environment of coaching a traditional club and has a profound knowledge of the 2. Bundesliga. We are convinced that we can achieve our goals with him and will now tackle squad planning together in order to build a strong and competitive team,” said sporting director Frank Baumann.

Markus Anfang is full of optimism ahead of his new role. “Werder is a great club, full of tradition with a great aura. I am grateful that Darmstadt have allowed me the opportunity to come to Bremen and that a fair solution was found for all parties. I hold Werder and its personnel in high regard, and I'm convinced we have a good chance of achieving promotion. However, nobody should think that it will be easy. The second division is too stron for that and will demand everything from us. A difficult but feasible task is before us, which will require all our strength and also patience. I am highly motivated to achieve our common goal.

Werder Bremen become the fourth club in Markus Anfang’s professional coaching career. After coaching a number of different youth teams at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Anfang moved on to Holstein Kiel, before coaching 1.FC Köln and most recently Darmstadt 98.
