In an intense game with a lot of fouls and breaks in play, SV Werder came away 1-0 winners against 1. FC Köln in Lohne. In the first 30-minute half there was nothing to split the two sides, with few chances to break the deadlock at either end. Köln only threatened twice with headers from Terodde and Sobiech, but one sailed over the bar whilst the other was held by Pavlenka. After the change of end, Werder finally showed up and had their first real chance of the game through substitute Josh Sargent (42’). It was Sargent who scored the only goal of the game in the 54th minute when he got the better of goalkeeper Timo Horn after a good individual effort.

Team news: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt named a completely different starting XI to the game against VfL Osnabrück, with nine pair of fresh legs. In front of Pavlenka in goal were captain Moisander, Gebre Selassie, Augustinsson and Friedl, with Füllkrug, Rashica and Osako in attack.

Post-match reaction:

Florian Kohfeldt: "The game was a tough test, and it went to plan. That is exactly what we wanted. Both teams are at a similar stage of pre-season and we won it in the end, and it wasn't fully undeserved in my eyes. It took a while for the back four to have an impact but then you could see the stability that it brought. In terms of the goal, Josh simply did brilliantly."
