SV Werder have a new number 10 in Leonardo Bittencourt. The new signing was officially presented to the media on Tuesday morning, after taking a year-long detour to TSG Hoffenheim. The 25-year-old had already been one of head coach Florian Kohfeldt’s ideal candidates during the transfer window last season. “I had a good feeling last year already, but it was a dream of mine to play in the Champions League as I’d rather play on Tuesday and Wednesday nights instead of lying around on the sofa at home,” Bittencourt said about his decision at the time. He’s since joined Werder and is “overjoyed to have found his way here.”

Once again, Florian Kohfeldt played a key role in Bittencourt’s decision to transfer to the Osterdeich. “Of course he played a big role in my decision, especially because I knew how he saw me and he knew what makes me tick right away,” the new signing revealed about the discussions with the Werder executives. Even the head coach did not have to think twice about completing the transfer. “The way that we want to play is a perfect fit for him. He is bold and confident. He’s passionate, which is exactly the way that we want to be,” said Kohfeldt.

Bittencourt: “My way of playing helps push the team forward”

There’s no doubt that Bittencourt’s speed and variability fit in with the Green-Whites. “I’m a passionate player and I like to get the fans engaged. I push the team with the manner and way that I play,” said the Leipzig native, who added with a grin: “Maybe it’s the Brazilian in me.” A bit of Brazilian magic in the North? That’s what Bittencourt wants to bring to the pitch and make a reality in this “special stadium” with the “best fans in the league.”

Playing in the wohninvest WESERSTADION was never an easy task for any of Bittencourt’s past teams, whether it was during his time with Energie Cottbus, Hannover 96, Borussia Dortmund or TSG Hoffenheim. “You always knew that it could be a difficult task here, even if you played well. That’s why, up until now, I’ve never liked hearing the goal song because it was always against me—hopefully, that will change soon,” said Bittencourt. The attacker can’t wait to meet his new teammates and make his debut for the Green-Whites.
