Together, Building the Strength to Succeed
It has been 120 years since a group of high-school kids formed an amateur football team using equipment they reportedly won during a tug-of war competition. This handful of early football fanatics affectionately named their nascent club after their river-side playing field in North Western Germany. In the intervening years, the SV Werder Bremen football team has become a national powerhouse, experiencing innumerable highs and lows along the way, while becoming embedded at the core of the local community.
SV Werder is a club born out of a child-like adoration for the sport, and this spirit is maintained come rain or shine. Following a particularly tough period throughout the 1970’s and into the early 80’s, Werder dropped into the second division for the first and only time in the club’s history. Things looked bleak until now-legendary coach Otto Rehhagel came in to revolutionise the whole playing style and ethos of the club, ushering in what is now remembered as ‘Pure Football’ era of Werder Bremen, in which their up-tempo play and a towering defence lead them to 4 domestic trophies and a European Cup-Winners Cup.
Optimistic ahead of the season that awaits, Werder have revealed new home and away kits that take inspiration from the period of tenacious transformation throughout the 1980’s and early 90s, while boldy embracing the club’s bright future. Armed with new apparel to turn heads on the pitch, and unite fans in the stand, Werder head into 19/20 ready to paint the league green and white.
