Ludwig Augustinsson’s Sweden also enjoyed a winning start to their qualifiers. The Werder defender played the full 90 minutes and impressed as his country beat Romania 2-1. The Swedes took a 2-0 lead in the first half through Quaison and Claesson, but suffered a setback in the 58th minute following a much-improved Romania team in the second half. The remaining half hour or so was largely uneventful, and Ludwig and Co. were able to see out their 2-1 lead comfortably for the three points.
On Saturday morning, the Germany U19s faced their second of three Elite Round fixtures. Werder’s Jean-Manuel Mbom started and finished the game, while Luca Plogmann remained an unused substitute despite having played the entirety of their previous game. The first half ended with no goals and no talking points, but Norway were able to get their noses in front quickly after the restart. Guido Streichsbier’s side began to press for the equaliser, but failed to find it, losing the game 1-0. With that result, Germany’s U19s must win against Hungary on Tuesday, 3rd March to keep their European championship hopes alive.
