Werder midfielder Maximilian Eggestein has received his first call up to the Germany national team from head coach Joachim Löw. The 22 year-old will travel on Monday to join the squad ahead of the first international fixture of 2019 against Serbia (Wednesday, 20th March, 20:45 CET in Wolfsburg). Die Mannschaft also face the Netherlands in their opening UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier on Sunday, 24th March in Amsterdam (20:45 CET).

“We are delighted for Maxi. He has fully deserved to receive this call up following his strong performances in recent months. Additionally, we are delighted as a club that Maxi has developed from our academy into an international player,” said Werder sporting director Frank Baumann. Eggestein is the first Green-Whites player to receive a call up to the Germany team since Serge Gnabry in 2016. Aaron Hunt was the last Werder academy graduate to represent his country.

“This nomination is also a reward for Maxi’s strong and stable development in previous years at Werder. I’m delighted for him and I’m certain he will make a good impression in the national team squad,” explained Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt. The player himself is also excited for the upcoming international fixtures. “I’m delighted to have received a call up to the national team. It is a great honour to represent my country,” added Eggestein.

Maxi Eggestein joined the SV Werder Bremen academy in 2011 from TSV Havelse and made his Bundesliga debut for the Green-Whites in 2014. Werder’s number 35 has gone on to make 82 Bundesliga so far in his young career, scoring eight goals. Eggestein has also made eleven appearances for Germany’s U21s side, scoring once.
