The DFB-Pokal round of 16 match away against Borussia Dortmund proved to be one of the biggest highlights of the season for the Green-Whites. Werder made history as they progressed to the quarter-finals after winning 4-2 on penalties in a sold out Signal Iduna Park. Florian Kohfeldt’s side went on to knock out Schalke in Gelsenkirchen in the last eight before pushing eventual winners FC Bayern München in the semi-finals in the Weser-Stadion. However, this DFB-Pokal campaign is now history and the time has come to write a new story for the history books. Werder will find out their opponents for the first round of the 2019/20 DFB-Pokal this Saturday at 18:00 CEST.

2003 Women’s World Cup winner Nia Künzer will conduct the draw in the German football museum in Dortmund on Saturday alongside DFB vice president Peter Frymuth. Werder will enter the first round draw as the second most successful team in the tournament’s history, winning the trophy on six occasions whilst reaching four more finals.

All of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 teams from the 2018/19 season will participate in the tournament as well as the top four teams from this season’s 3. Liga and 21 amateur teams representing their respective regional associations. The teams have been divided into two pots with all of the Bundesliga teams in the first pot alongside the highest 14 ranked teams from Bundesliga 2. The remaining four teams from the second tier will be in the second group alongside the 3. Liga and amateur teams.

Werder are in the first pot and could face any team from the second pot. There could be some interesting match-ups ahead: Werder would have a real derby on their hands if Nia Künzer were to draw either FC Oberneuland or SV Atlas Delmenhorst on Saturday. Both clubs are located just a few minutes’ drive from Osterdeich. At the same time, Werder could also head to a stadium that has hosted both World Cup and Bundesliga matches. A duel with 1. FC Kaiserslautern would mean facing a club with a long history and tradition. But, Werder could meet even stronger challenges in the form of SV Sandhausen, VfL Osnabrück, Karlsruher SC and SV Wehen Wiesbaden—four second division sides that are all in the second pot.

Florian Kohfeldt’s side have just one goal: facing their opponents and moving on to the next round—to repeat the experience of last year’s Pokal season and to tack on another chapter in the 2019/20 season: one with a final in Berlin.
