Maximilian Eggestein could not be having a better season: a permanent spot in Florian Kohfeldt’s squad, a call-up to the first team, and the chance to qualify for Europe on the last matchday of the season. Based on his skill, the Werder midfielder has become indispensible. One of the youngster’s notable strengths is his ability to run long distances. In the Bundesliga, Eggestein is the player that has covered the most distance this season: a total of 398.5 km. It begs the question of whether or not his strength will ever let up. “That’s not a problem for me,” said the 22-year-old.

The midfielder has still not had enough, even after 33 Bundesliga games and five rounds in the DFB-Pokal competition. Why though, when Werder still have a chance to qualify for Europe this Saturday (15:30 CEST), if TSG Hoffenheim and VfL Wolfsburg fail to pick up any points in their respective matches. Eggestein doesn’t believe this scenario is as unlikely as seems. “We’ve experienced for ourselves what it’s like when a team is able to play freely. The best example of that would be our match in Düsseldorf.” But, the German international also doesn’t believe that RB Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick will tell his players to take it easy, even with their DFB-Pokal final in sight for later this month. “It’s about proving yourself. Everyone wants to take part in a game like that,” Eggestein said with an eye on their upcoming opponent and added, “However, we still have a task to accomplish. Everything else is secondary.”

Eggestein isn’t bothered by the fact that, if Werder qualify for Europe, their summer break may be shortened. At the same time, finishing in seventh would also mean that preparations for next season would be moved up as well. “I’d be happy if they were included in that. In fact, I think that they fit in quite well there,” said Eggestein, who could also take part in the U21 European Championship prior to the start of Werder’s training camp. But, the young player also knows that “it’s important to take the time to get your head on right” as well. It seems as though that won’t take him very long.
