The Werder boys, having recently beaten RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, also saw their instrumental man Zlatko Junuzovic play a crucial role in leading Austria to victory. The SVW captain was also a key player in his side’s 2-0 hard-earned victory against Moldova yesterday. Junuzovic set up Martin Harnik for the second goal in stoppage time in what was a strong performance from the team overall. The result means Austria maintain their chances of a place at the World Cup in Russia next year.
However Werder’s centre-back Niklas Moisander suffered another setback with Finland. After a 2-0 defeat away in Turkey and still just one point in the bag, the Scandinavians can all but give up hope of reaching next summer’s tournament in Russia.
The Czech Republic’s Theodor Gebre Selassie (played 45 minutes in the 3-0 victory over Lithuania), Serbia U21 Milos Veljkovic (played 87 minutes in 2-0 win over Sweden) and Ulisses Garcia with the Switzerland U20 squad (played 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Germany) were all in action for their respective countries in friendly matches. Niklas Schmidt has already featured in two fixtures for European qualifying with the Germany U19s. Schmidt was brought off after 67 minutes against Cyprus and the young talent came on in the last minute of the victory over Serbia.
