Werder Bremen dropped their last test match of the preparation phase, losing 1-0 at Leicester City. Wes Morgan scored the decisive goal. Werder were unable to take advantage of their chances in the dress rehearsal for the German DFB Cup first round match at FV Illertissen on Sunday.
Werder were put under pressure early on against the promoted Premier League side and fell behind 1-0 in the seventh minute. Morgan rose highest off a corner and headed home past the Green-Whites keeper Raphael Wolf.
Zlatko Junuzovic was close to equalising just four minutes later but his shot from 17 yards out went just wide of the goal. Werder had found their way back into the game but couldn't use their chances.
Izet Hajrovic played a superb pass to Nils Petersen in the 25th minute but the striker was stopped on a superb save by Kasper Schmeichel. Petersen missed another opportunity in the 31st minute, getting stopped on a trio of attempts. Leicester went into the break ahead 1-0.
Werder were lucky in the 47th minute to be down just 1-0 as Wolf made a strong save at the line. In the 52nd minute, Junuzovic sent his free kick just over the bar. In a more balanced second half, the Green-Whites pushed forward looking to even the match, but Robin Dutt's team just couldn't get the goal, leaving Werder having to accept a 1-0 defeat at Leicester City.
Robin Dutt about...
... the result of the match: "We were a little tired. I cannot say if it was because of the two-game weeks or the trip over here. But you could definitely tell that the team was tired. We could not do what we wanted to do in the match."
... the preparation: "I am altogether very satisfied with the preparations. Losses are part of a good preparation, to sharpen the senses. Of course, the injuries hurt us, especially those to Sebastian Prödl and Franco Di Santo, but I hope that Di Santo will be fit in time for Illertissen."
