After three victories in a row, SV Werder suffered their first defeat of the new calendar year, losing 3-1 at MSV Duisburg. While Franco Di Santo made his comeback to the pitch, Levent Aycicek scored the goal for the Green-Whites.

Werder fell behind early as they watched Duisburg make it 1-0 after just four minutes. Kingsley Onuegbu was fed the ball in the box and then beat Luca Caldirola and Raphael Wolf before hitting home for Duisburg. Wolf had to clear out his goal again in the 17th minute as Duisburg captain Steffen Bohl headed in a cross from the right side for the 2-0 lead for the third division side. The Green-Whites pulled a goal back just 120 seconds later as Aycicek pounded on a loose ball and blasted home from 16 yards out to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Green-Whites were beaten by a counter attack in the 31st minute and fell behind 3-1 when Zlatko Janjic tallied for the hosts. Werder coach Viktor Skripnik subbed out the entire team at half-time other than keeper Wolf, but Bremen could not build upon their strong performances from the last test matches and ended up losing 3-1 against MSV Duisburg.

Reaction to the match:

Viktor Skripnik about ...

... the run of play: "It was not a good match for us. We didn't go into the challenges in the beginning. The guys are accordingly disappointed. The opponents had a good day. But there's a saying that a preparation without a defeat is not a good preparation."

... the comeback of Di Santo: "You could see that he still needs some time. But he is definitely on a good way."

Franco Di Santo about ...

... his return: "It was a difficult match for me and I still need some more minutes to get the confidence in the knee. But basically, I am happy to be back on the pitch. I want to get better match by match."
