Werder Bremen suffered their fifth loss of the season on matchday eight, losing 1-0 to bottom of the league Hannover 96. Viktor Skripnik's side the much better team in the first half, but were unable to create any significant chances. Salif Sané scored for the hosts with a header in the second half. Werder impressed in the final quarter of an hour, putting constant pressure on Ron-Robert Zieler's goal. All that counts, however, is the 1-0 defeat.

Line-up and formation:
Florian Grillitsch made his debut in the starting XI, whilst birthday boy Claudio Pizarro started from the bench. Gálvez was also a new addition to the starting XI, in place of Lukimya, whilst Ulisses Garcia came in for Felix Kroos, and Bartels started in place of Öztunali.

Werder start the better side, Ujah hits the crossbar

5th minute: Werder start bravely, putting constant pressure on the Hannover goal. Theodor Gebre Selassie is looking particularly lively down the right hand side. Skripnik said they were pre-match favourites and his side are showing that so far.

14th minute: Hannover are looking shaky as Werder continue to look the more likely side to score. The Reds are working hard to prevent the Green-Whites from creating any chances.

21th minute: Ujah picks up the ball on the edge of the box and as he goes to take it round Sané, the Hannover player appeares to handle the ball. The referee waves away protests for the free-kick and play continues.

26th minute: Commotion in the Hannover penalty area. Did the ball hit defenders arm? Bremen's attack is halted all of a sudden, before Peter Sippel gives the back to Hannover. Odd decision from the official.

35th minute: Best chance of the game so far for the home side. Karaman crosses it in to Leon Andreasen, who fires a shot towards to top corner, but Felix Wiedwald pulls of a sensational diving save to keep the score 0-0.

41th minute: Long ball forward to Bartels, who manages to deliver a high cross into the box for Ujah, who manages head it onto the crossbar. Crazy! At the other end, Schmiedbach has a chance to put Hannover in front, but Clemens Fritz nips in at the last second.

Sané head Hannover to 1-0 win

54th minute: Huge opportunity for Werder. Junuzovic fires a deep free-kick towards the far post, forcing a last-ditch save from Zieler, following a defensive mix-up.

56th minute:
Kiotake whips in a great corner and Sané beats Vestergaard in the air to head the ball into the back of the net. 1-0 to Hannover.

59th minute: Uli Garcia makes way for Claudio Pizarro!

65th minute: Santi Garcia heads just wide from a corner. So unlucky, just a whisker away from hitting the back of the net!

70th minute: Junuzovic and Eggestein link up brilliantly down the right, the latter producing a delightful piece of skill. Bartels pounces on the rebound but doesn't test Zieler-

74th minute: NOO! Eggestein so close to scoring the equaliser! Somehow Zieler pulls of an outstanding save from point-blank range to deny a certain goal. Werder are pushing hard for this leveller!

78th minute: Hannover‘s Erdinc is on for seconds before he forces another big save from Wiedwald. The Werder keeper holds on well, but it's Bremen who need to score the goal here!

81st minute: Werder are applying the pressure and Hannover are clinging on. Chance after chance, but nobody can score! Fritz forces a save from Zieler and Bartels fluffs the rebound.

90th minute: Four minutes injury time. Werder fighting to the death, but Hannover are defending well.

94th minute: All over. Werder head back to the Weser goalless and pointless.

Summary: It's going to be an uncomfortable autumn for the Bremen side, as four consecutive defeats would suggest. The Green-Whites controlled the game for long spells and kept Hannover at bay, but after the break the hosts came out much bolder and were able to find the lead through Sané. Ultimately, Werder simply didn't create enough chances in the opening 70 minutes of the game, despite their superior possession. The final stage showed that the fight and determination is still there amongst the Werder squad, however at the end of the day there are no points to show for it. Now we have the international break, before Bayern come to Bremen on 17th October.
