Werder Bremen suffered their third straight defeat after losing 0-3 to Champions League side Bayer Leverkusen. Admir Mehmedi, Julian Brandt and Kevin Kampl scored for the guests. Bundesliga debutants Marcel Hilßner and Luca Zander, who were introduced with roughly 30 minutes to go by Viktor Skripnik, were unable to make a difference to the result.

Line-up and personnel: Starting XI debut for Claudio Pizarro! Aaron Johannsson missed out through injury. Öztunali slotted in to replace the suspended Fin Bartels, and Junuzovic (who could only start from the bench against Darmstadt because of illness) came in for Sternberg.

Ujah hits the post, Mehmedi scores

8th minute: Both teams started very well. The first real chance fell to Levin Öztunali, who was put through by Pizarro and saw his shot roll narrowly wide of the far post.

16th minute: Werder started the better of the teams, and started to build the pressure on the opponent's goal. The guests looked more and more unsure at the back.

20th minute: They did though manage to carve out a chance. Kießling gets the ball with his back to goal, sets up Mehmedi, but his shot is well blocked. The score stays at 0-0.

23rd minute: After a dangerous corner from Bayer, Pizarro is forced to clear near the goal mouth.
26th minute: POST! UJAH! Anthony Ujah drives down the left and smashes the ball against the post. Bremen so close to taking the lead, which wouldn't have been undeserved.

30th minute: Pizarro spots Junuzovic, a pass not many would have seen. The Austrian drives down the right and crosses the ball, Ujah can't quite get there.

31st minute: Goal for the guests! Admir Mehmedi cuts in from the right and shoots from about 15 metres. Lukimya tries to block it with his knee, and the ball deflects up leaving Wiedwald stranded.

40th minute: POST! This time Donati hits the woodwork. The game goes up a gear.

45th minute: Lukimya and Wiedwald manage to thwart a dangerous Bayer attack - half time.

Brandt and Kampl seal the game

56th minute: Dangerous free kick for Leverkusen. Julian Bradnt, who was born in Bremen, steps up from 16,5 metres out...

57th minute: ...and he puts it away. Santi Garcia gets his head to it but can't stop it going in under the crossbar: 2-0 Leverkusen. A very unlucky period for the hosts...

65th minute: Kevin Kampl lines one up 20 metres out and curls it expertly past Wiedwald - 0-3.

67th minute: Almost 0-4. Lukimya tracking back stops another Leverkusen goal. Leverkusen really pushing at this stage.

72nd minute: Santi Garcia clears off the line. Wiedwald was beaten...

82nd minute: Junuzovic is put through one on one, but his shot is blocked at the last minute by a good recovering challenge. Unlucky again.

86th minute: Leverkusen not letting off. The guests bring on Kampl, Calhanoglu and Chicharito, hoping that the fresh legs lead to more goals.

90th minute: Full time.

Conclusion: The 0-3 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen is Werder's third on the bounce. Skripnik's team were unable to get any goals despite playing better for periods of the first half. The two goals conceded in the second half were gifts to Leverkusen, and put the game to bed. At that stage, Leverkusen were able to keep the ball and attack, whilst Werder were not able to mount any more threatening attacks. In seven days, Werder have another chance to arrest this alarming trend. Hannover 96 await them next weekend.
