On Bundesliga match day seven, Werder Bremen played out a rather disappointing 1-1 draw with SC Freiburg and thus slipped back into bottom place in the table. Vladimir Darida put the visitors in front from the penalty spot, but Franco Di Santo levelled for the Green-Whites before the break.
Two changes
Werder trainer Robin Dutt made two changes to his starting eleven from last weekend, with Eljero Elia and Aleandro Galvez getting the nod on this occasion ahead of Nils Petersen and Izet Hajrovic. Cedrick Makiadi had recovered from his hip injury in time to take a place in the midfield.
Early set-back
40,029 fans piled into the Weser Stadium, but saw the home side get off to the worst possible start, as the Green-Whites went behind with just eight minutes on the clock. In a challenge for the ball with Sebastian Prödl, Maximilian Philipp crashed to the ground and the referee immediately offered a penalty for SC. Vladimir Darida stepped up and put Raphael Wolf the wrong way, to make it 1-0 for Freiburg. The Green-Whites slowly but steadily battled their way back into the game and had a chance to draw level in the 24th minute, with Eljero Elia bursting into the box and attempting to lob the on-rushing keeper, but Bürki did excellently to get a hand up and turn the ball over the bar.
Di Santo equalises
In the 31st minute, Werder were then rewarded for their determined efforts with the equaliser. Taking on a wonderful pass from Zlatko Junuzovic, Franco Di Santo fired home unstoppably from 14 meters out into the top right corner. Werder took control of proceedings but were unable to create anything of real danger and the sides went into the break with the score poised evenly at 1-1.
Frantz tests the woodwork
The second period began with something of a shock for Werder, with Mike Frantz hammering the ball against the right post in the 49th minute. At the other end, Werder had their next opening, with the impressive and active Eljero Elia feeding Di Santo, but Roman Bürki in the Freiburg goal was equal to the striker's effort. Robin Dutt brought in Davie Selke for Eljero Elia in the 72nd minute, to add fresh legs to the attack. Fin Bartels tested Bürki from distance (76‘) and a Franco Di Santo's strike was disallowed for off-side (78'), but in the end, the clash between Werder and Freiburg at the Weser Stadium was to end in a disappointing 1-1 draw.
