Although Werder couldn't record their 500th home victory in the Bundesliga, the Green-Whites still took a point against FSV Mainz as the match ended 0-0...

Although Werder will have to wait for another matchday to secure their 500th home victory in the Bundesliga, the Green-Whites still managed to take a point against FSV Mainz as the match ended 0-0. Viktor Skripnik's team currently sit in 9th place with 35 points to their name.

Line-up and formation: Viktor Skripnik had to replace two midfielders before kick-off. Clemens Fritz missed out completely, suffering from a stiff neck, while Zlatko Junuzovic started on the bench. This meant that Felix Kroos and Levent Aycicek came into midfield.

Mainz dominate first half

9th minute: It's the visitors with the first chance of the match as the Green-Whites switch off. Koo heads on a Mainz throw-in to Okazaki and his volley flies just over the crossbar.

13th minute: First opportunity for Werder. As Vestergaard battles with Bell to get a head to Aycicek's free kick, it's the Mainz defender who ends up directing the ball towards his own goal but Karius safely holds on.

21st minute: Teasing cross from Aycicek, Karius comes off his line and flaps at the ball but no Werder players can capitalise.

22nd minute: This game could go either way as there have been very few clear-cut chances for either team so far. Both defences have had to deal with several set-pieces already.

35th minute: Real let off for the Green-Whites. Prödl fails to clear after going up for a header against Okazaki, Koo pounces on the loose ball and feeds it through to Malli, who rounds Wolf but luckily fires into the side netting.

Junuzovic makes a difference – Bartels spurns best chance

55th minute: The second half has started in a similar fashion to the first with Werder currently under pressure. Raphael Wolf does well to keep the team from falling behind, pulling off a fantastic reflex save from Koo's point-blank header.

59th minute: Top-drawer goalkeeping from Werder's number 1. Geis drills in a fierce free kick and forces Wolf into a superb reaction save.

63rd minute: Almost out of nowhere, the hosts have their first big chance of the second half. Bartels floats a cross into the box which eventually lands at Aycicek's feet but Karius pulls off a fantastic stop to keep the scores level.

71st minute: 20 minutes left for either team to try and find the winner. Best period of the game for Werder, who are camped in the Mainz half.

76th minute: Werder are really pushing for the winner but have to get back to prevent Mainz capitalising from a quick counterattack. Vestergaard manages to block Malli's shot from 15 metres out just in the nick of time.

87th minute: We're into the dying stages of the game. Are we going to have some late drama?

91st minute: Geis whips in a corner, Okazaki rises highest and heads goalbound but it's an easy gather for Wolf.

92nd minute: Soooo close to scoring a last-gasp winner! Werder's best move of the game sees the ball come to Fin Bartels 13 metres out, who fires just centimetres wide of the post.

Summary: The fans in the Weser-Stadion had to be patient for a large part of the match as Werder struggled to get a foothold in the game. Werder were careless, didn't get their flowing passing game going and conceded possession all too easily in the first half. If it wasn't for Raphael Wolf, Mainz could have taken the lead. The game changed when Zlatko Junuzovic entered the fray. The midfielder helped Bremen put Mainz under a great deal of pressure, dominated the centre of the pitch and carved out some real openings; however, it wasn't enough for Werder to snatch all three points. Fin Bartels also spurned a last-minute opportunity. Mainz quickly switched from defence to attack and always threatened on the break so in the end a draw was a fair result.
