Werder Bremen failed to hold a two-goal lead and missed out on a victory on the 32nd game day of the Bundesliga, playing to only a 2-2 draw in their crucial home match against 1899 Hoffenheim. Aaron Hunt (penalty) and Kevin De Bruyne gave Bremen a 2-0 advantage but Sven Schipplock scored in the 86th and 90th minute to give the Green-Whites only one point.

De Bruyne for Junuzovic

Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made one change to his starting line-up with De Bruyne, who returned from his thigh problem, replacing Zlatko Junuzovic, who had to be stricken from the squad in the last minute due to a cold.

Early lead

Werder went ahead after just 120 seconds as Hunt was felled in the box after a pass from De Bruyne and then converted the penalty in front of 42,100 spectators at the sold-out Weser Stadium to make it 1-0 for the Green-Whites in the second minute.

De Bruyne scores to make it 2-0

After that, the spectators, who provided a spectacular atmosphere, saw an exciting and thrilling match. Hoffenheim missed a chance through Abraham in the 18th minute. And then Werder made it 2-0 in the 24th minute with Nils Petersen winning a ball on the right side and passing to De Bruyne, who struck into the lower left corner. Schaaf's team went into the break with the 2-0 advantage.

Contested second half

The second half remained contested for quite some time because the guests from Hoffenheim pushed forward looking to pull a goal back. And the Green-Whites could not keep up their pressure from the first half. In the 55th minute, Sebastian Prödl was unlucky as his header off a corner found only the side netting. At the other end, Tobias Weis shot just wide from long distance in the 62nd minute.

Bitter final stage

Bremen were stronger in the middle of the second half and had a number of counter attacks. But De Bruyne (65th minute) and Hunt (82nd) both failed to score. And then came the bitter final minutes. Schipplock first cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 86th minute. The Werder defence fully lost its concentration and Schipplock shocked the 42,100 fans by equalising in the 90th minute.
