Hunt starts

Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf made two changes to his starting line-up with Aaron Hunt and Eljero Elia replacing the suspended captain Clemens Fritz and Theo Gebre Selassie. Elia played on the right side of the offensive midfield with Mehmet Ekici playing on the left side.

Lukimya heads off the crossbar

Werder started the match in a fury and had a big chance after just two minutes as Hunt's corner found Assani Lukimya, who rose high to strike a header off the crossbar. Bremen continued their push forward and had two more chances but Hannover keeper Ron-Robert Zieler held attempts by Ekici and Sokratis.

Post for Sokratis

The Green-Whites were unlucky again in the 11th minute as Sokratis headed off the post. At the other end, Diouf had a good chance for Hannover. Zieler continued his strong match in the 22nd minute with a fine save against Petersen. The match remained up-tempo the rest of the first half with Hannover especially dangerous on the counter-attack. But the teams went into the changing rooms deadlocked at 0-0.

Lukimya and Petersen miss

The guests had the first chance of the second half with Diouf's shot being stopped by Green-Whites keeper Sebastian Mielitz. Schaaf's team began to take over the proceedings. Lukimya got a fine pass from Elia in the 55th minute but shot just over the bar and Petersen was just off target in the 63rd minute.

Petersen strikes twice

Werder were clearly the better team and finally got their deserved 1-0 goal in the 85th minute as Elia's cross went to Petersen, who hammered the ball into the net. Petersen finished off the game in the 88th minute, volleying in an assist from substitute Özkan Yildirim to make it 2-0 - and secure the Green-Whites' victory.
