Werder Bremen failed to build on their victory from last week in playing to a 1-1 draw at Greuther Fürth on the ninth match day in the Bundesliga. Nils Petersen scored for the Green-Whites to equalise Edu's early goal for Fürth - the first goal at home this season for the team from Franconia. The draw leaves SV Werder with 11 points.
One change, Fürth take early lead
Head coach Thomas Schaaf made just one change to his line-up with Sebastian Prödl returning to the back-line for Assani Lukimya. In adverse conditions with wind and snow, Werder could not have started the game any worse as Fürth grabbed the lead 1-0 in the eighth minute. Zoltan Sieber crossed from the left side to the far right post where Edu slotted home. Bremen appeared to equalise in the 10th minute but the officials ruled that Prödl committed a foul before his header.
Petersen heads in equaliser
The Green-Whites remained the dominating team. But Fürth keeper Max Grün stopped Marko Arnautovic's shot in the 24th minute and Petersen's attempt four minutes later. And Zlatko Junuzovic's long blast was deflected just inches wide right by Petersen in the 31st minute. Werder finally equalised 1-1 in the 44th minute with Arnautovic and Junuzovic playing a one-two before Arnatovic's pass to Petersen for a header from five yards. And the teams went into the changing rooms deadlocked at 1-1. '
Missed chances for guests
Werder missed another chance five minutes after the break as Petersen's shot went over the bar. And the Green-Whites were not efficient enough again in the 59th as Grün stopped Petersen's attempt and Arnautovic's rebound shot as well before Heinich Schmidtgal cleared the ball.
Lucky for the draw
Werder ended up being lucky to have collected the point as Fürth nearly took the lead again in the 68th minute but Thomas Kleine headed wide left from nine yards out. Schaaf tried to give his team some more power, making a double substitution in the 77th minute with Niclas Füllkrug coming on for Eljero Elia and Lukimya replacing Prödl. But in the end, it was Fürth with the final chance in the 84th minute but Schmidtgal's blast found only the side netting.
