Werder Bremen fought back for a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at home against Fortuna Düsseldorf on the 12th match day to improve to seventh place in the Bundesliga. Jens Langeneke gave Düsseldorf the lead but Nils Petersen and Kevin De Bruyne rewarded the Green-Whites for a tough fight for an important win at home - despite finishing the match with 10 men after Assani Lukimya was sent off.

Early deficit
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf started the same line-up which lost last weekend on the road against Schalke 04. The Green-Whites began the match offensive-minded while the guests from Düsseldorf worked hard early on defence. Werder got caught on a counter-attack in the ninth minute and Sokratis fouled Robbie Kruse in the area for a penalty, which Langeneke converted past a chance-less Sebastian Mielitz as Werder fell behind 1-0.

A number of chances
Petersen had a chance to equalise in the 15th minute on a fine attack but failed to convert from a good position. At the other end, Mielitz made a great save against Ken Ilsö to keep Bremen in the game. Bremen were close again in the 23rd minute as Aaron Hunt fed a through ball to Eljero Elia but the Dutchman hurried his shot and was off target. Werder continued to push forward but lacked the final touch and went into the changing rooms down 1-0.

Petersen equalises
Werder came out of the break with momentum and increased the tempo and effort. And Schaaf's team was rewarded for their dedication in the 51st minute with the 1-1 equaliser with Lukas Schmitz crossing from the left side into the area where Petersen headed home the Green-Whites' first goal of the evening.

Yellow-red for Lukimya
Düsseldorf were pushed deep into their own half and the promoted side's keeper Fabian Giefer made a superb save against Marko Arnautovic in the 67th minute to prevent the Green-Whites' possible go-ahead goal. And the hosts went a man down in the 77th minute as Lukimya was sent off with his second bookable offence. Bremen continued to have chances though as Petersen's shot in the 80th minute went just off target.

De Brunye scores
Werder finally scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute as Petersen collected the ball, passed to Hunt, who crossed into the box where De Bruyne blasted home to make it 2-1. And Schaaf's team held on for the victory.
