Werder Bremen played to a 1-1 draw at Nuremberg in a crazy Bundesliga match. Mehmet Ekici gave the Green-Whites the lead while goalkeeper Tim Wiese was shown the red card. Playing a man down, Werder saw Philipp Wollscheid score the equaliser in the 63rd minutes. The draw allowed Bremen to take over at least temporarily the lead in the Bundesliga.

Ekici for Marin

Head coach Thomas Schaaf changed his line-up only in one position with Ekici replacing the injured Marko Marin in the offensive midfield. But Schaaf was forced to make a substitution after just six minutes as Sokratis had to leave the pitch with a groin problem and be replaced by Lukas Schmitz.

Red for Wiese

Werder's game on the sixth game day would get even stranger. In the 17th minute, Wiese was sent from the pitch with a red card for his foul against Christian Eigler. Marko Arnautovic left the game, with backup keeper Sebastian Mielitz coming in. Nuremberg were the better team but it was Werder who took the lead after 24 minutes despite playing a man down. Claudio Pizarro fed Ekici, who coolly scored into the net of his former team to make it 1-0. Torrential rainfall caused the game to be postponed temporarily and Bremen led 1-0 at half-time, which was extended to 35 minutes by the referees due to the bad weather.

Equaliser by Wollscheid

Nuremberg would eventually get the equaliser with the man advantage in the second half. Werder fought but could not maintain their morale on the rain-soaked pitch and watched Nuremberg equalise in the 63rd minute at 1-1 through Wollscheid's header. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Bremen were able to capture a one despite playing 77 minutes a man down.
