A look at the statistics between Werder Bremen and Freiburg is positive and gives one hope for the second victory of the second half of the season. Werder won the past five showdowns, including the last two home games 6-0. And the Green-Whites' last of five Bundesliga losses against Freiburg (16 victories, two draws) came with legends such as Marco Bode, Dieter Eilts and Andreas Herzog on the pitch.
Good football and lots of confidence
But of course it would be risky to read too much into the statistics going into the game on Sunday, 3 March 2011 at 3:30 p.m. at Freiburg's badenova Stadium. Just like in the first half encounter, the roles for Werder and Freiburg have been swapped this season. Freiburg remains in the fight for the international ranks while the Green-Whites are still dangerously close to the relegation zone.
And head coach Thomas Schaaf's evaluation of his next opponents made that clear. "Freiburg play good football. My colleague over there is doing excellent work. You could see in the preparations already that they put together a good team which works well with one another. And that continued throughout the season so that now they have a lot of confidence," said Schaaf.
Just like the some 2,000 Werder fans who will be making the 700 kilometre trip to Freiburg, Clemens Fritz will also be solely a spectator on Sunday. The 30-year-old will miss out due to a yellow card suspension. In addition to the long-time injured, Aaron Hunt will likely miss the game with question marks remaining for Dominik Schmidt and Wesley. Freiburg are also missing a couple of key figures including defender Mensur Mujdza (like Fritz a fifth yellow booking) and Julian Schieber.
