Werder Bremen's struggles continued on the 20th game day of the Bundesliga with a disappointing 3-1 loss at home against Bayern Munich. Per Mertesacker gave Thomas Schaaf's team the lead but Arjen Robben and Miroslav Klose scored for Bayern and Mertesacker struck an own goal as well. The Green-Whites finished the game with 10 men as keeper Tim Wiese was shown the red card in the final moments.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf made two changes to the line-up which lost 3-0 at Cologne with Marko Marin and Sebastian Prödl replacing Felix Kroos and Marko Arnautovic. Things started well for the Green-Whites as Clemens Fritz stood alone in front of Bayern keeper Thomas Kraft but could not score in the first minute. And Bremen had another opportunity after 14 minutes with a Mikael Silvestre header. Bayern created more chances the rest of the first half with Andreas Ottl's long shot glancing off the upper half of the crossbar (17th) while Mario Gomez missed two solid opportunities (30th, 36th) and Arjen Robben was close just before the break with the teams knotted at 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Schaaf did not make changes at the break but the Green-Whites took the lead in the 47th minute on a set piece with a free kick being headed on by Prödl to Per Mertesacker, who had plenty of space and time to slot past Kraft into the far right corner for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. Werder could not withstand the Bayern push forward as Munich knotted the game 1-1 in the 65th minute with Arjen Robben hitting home Thomas Müller's cross. Bayern's Luiz Gustavo appeared to handle a ball in the area in the 67th minute but the referee refused to blow the whistle. And Bayern took the lead 2-1 in the 76th minute on Mertesacker's second goal - an own goal as Mario Gomez's cross from the right side went past Werder keeper Tim Wiese off Mertesacker's shin. And former Bremen striker Miroslav Klose made it 3-1 in the 87th after an unselfish pass from Müller. The game ended with a bitter moment as Tim Wiese was shown a red card in the 89th minute for his rude attack on Müller. Bremen have collected just one victory in their last six matches.
