German national team coach Joachim Löw announced Wednesday afternoon that he only selected one Werder Bremen player - Tim Wiese - for the up-coming matches against Uruguay, Austria and Azerbaijan.
Löw decided against nominating Green-Whites defender Per Mertesacker, who has become a regular pillar in the German backline. "We decided together that he will not be with us this time. He should use the time to allow his injuries to heal and regenerate for the new season," reasoned Löw.
While Germany's first match on Sunday 29 May 2011 at 8 p.m. in Sinsheim against Uruguay is only a friendly, Wiese and Co. have two Euro2012 qualification matches on Friday 3 June 2011 at 8:30 p.m. in Vienna against Austria and four days later on 7 June 2011 at 7 p.m. in Baku against Azerbaijan.
