There was plenty of action in the stands as well as on the pitch at the final training ahead of the final match of the year. While the fans flocked to the training grounds to watch the Green-Whites one more time before the final match of the first half, a number of players returned from their injuries over the course of the week.
All told, 26 players were bidding Saturday afternoon for a chance to play on Sunday against Nuremberg, giving head coach Thomas Schaaf a difficult choice for the nomination of the roster. The Werder coach did not have an easy decision for the final 18 players. "It's good to have a large choice. We continually work on having this situation. Our goal is that all players are available and then being able to decide at the highest level who will be on the roster," said Schaaf.
All the players wanted to showcase themselves for the final match of the year. And Schaaf gave his players extra praise. "That looked really good. In the final match, the tempo was high as well as the motivation and the enthusiasm," said the coach. Schaaf will once again have available his deputy captain Aaron Hunt, who missed the matches against Hoffenheim and Frankfurt with calf problems. The midfielder returned to regular training in the middle of the week.
Schaaf is sending these 18 Werder players into the final match of the first half: Mielitz, Strebinger - Lukimya, De Bruyne, Arnautovic, Fritz, Ekici, Elia, Schmitz, Hunt, Prödl, Junuzovic, Ignjovski, Akpala, Sokratis, Gebre Selassie, Petersen und Füllkrug.
