Once referee Felix Zwayer blew the final whistle after 93 minutes against Nuremberg, the Werder players collectively hung their heads. The 1-0 defeat against Nuremberg was SV Werder's first loss of the 2012 and the second time this season that they left their home grounds at Weser Stadium empty-handed. And the reaction to the game was fitting.
"This is a huge disappointment. We had hoped for more against Nuremberg and felt like we had controlled the game the whole time. That's why this defeat is very, very bitter," said captain Clemens Fritz afterwards, while also looking forward. "It will not be difficult for us to get back up. We know that it will be a hard fight for the international spots and we are prepared for it. We have to try to collect points each week. I think our team has the potential to reach our goals with our fans."
WERDER.DE collected further reaction:
Klaus Allofs:
"We started well but didn't have the conviction to get a goal out of it. Against Nuremberg you always have to watch out for their counter attack. They are dangerous."
Tom Trybull:
"We did a good job today but only up until the area. Unfortunately we were missing the last pass and spark of an idea. Nuremberg scored one goal out of two chances. We were missing the effectiveness that we had the past few weeks."
Claudio Pizarro:
"Nuremberg did well today. We had a couple of good actions but didn't use our chances. And that cost us the points today. Sometimes the ball just doesn't want to go in. Today was one of those days, where the ball just hits the post. But it will work out again in the next game."
Marko Marin:
"We failed to play the final 20 yards today and were not resolute in front of their goal. It is very aggravating. I also missed my chance when Claudio played the ball over to me. I did not react quickly enough."
