It was a concilatory finish for Prödl and company! Despite failing to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the Austrian national team won their final group match against Faroe Islands 3-0. And as if that weren't enough, Werder's Sebastian Prödl scored for Austria on a corner to make it 2-0.
Werder teammate Zlatko Junuzovic had to watch Prödl's fourth international goal for Austria's national team from the bench as he did not appear in the match.
Things were similar for Theodor Gebre Selassie. The Czechs did beat Bulgaria 1-0 but the right back did not make an appearance. The Czechs only had minimal chances of reaching the play-offs and the win was not enough as Denmark beat Malta and France knocked off Finland 3-0.
Just like Germany's senior national team with the World Cup, the German U19 national team also reached the next hurdle in qualifying for a major tournament. Green-Whites Davie Selke and Marcel Hilßner helped Germany to a 1-1 draw against Scotland in Cologne to reach the next qualifying round for the 2014 U19 European Championship in Hungary.
One Werder player will definitely play at a world championship and that with Austria. Florian Lercher, a 17-year-old defender from SV Werder's U17 side, will be captain for Austria at the U17 World Championship in the United Arab Emirates. Starting on 19 October 2013, Werder fans can cross their fingers that a Werder player can bring a world championship title back to Bremen.
