He took on a big risk and now he's experienced his own football fairytale. Former Werder youth player Jerome Polenz didn't have a club before this season, keeping fit with his former U23 teammates before deciding to move to Australia.
To play football, for the newly-formed club Western Sydney Wanderers. When Polenz signed his deal, there were only 12 players under contract! And now, Polenz and Wanderers are Australian champions! The team is qualified for the Champions League and still has a chance for the double Down Under with the Grand Final playoffs.
"You cannot describe in words what has happened here. It's an absolute fairytale. Before the season, we were a nobody. Now we broke the records for the longest winning streak and most victories in a season. We are drawing 15,000-20,000 fans for every match and the hype around this club and this team has taken on unbelievable proportions. Even Prime Minister Julia Gillard was here to visit," said Polenz in an extensive interview with WERDER MAGAZIN, which comes out on Friday.
Polenz played three Bundesliga matches for the Green-Whites in 2005-06 while appearing in 64 contests with SV Werder's U23s between 2005 and 2007, scoring 15 goals. In the summer of 2007, he transferred to Alemannia Aachen and later to Union Berlin.
