The Greek team with Werder defender Sokratis spoiled the hopes of co-hosts Poland and Werder teammate Sebastian Boenisch to open the Euro 2012 with a victory by playing to a 1-1 draw. After Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Poland, Dimitris Salpingidis equalised for the Greeks. Greek captain Georgios Karagounis saw his penalty stopped in the 71st minute. While Boenisch played the full 90 minutes, Sokratis was sent off after 45 minutes with his second bookable offense.
