The Greek team with Werder defender Sokratis spoiled the hopes of co-hosts Poland and Werder teammate Sebastian Boenisch to open the Euro 2012 with a victory by playing to a 1-1 draw. After Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Poland, Dimitris Salpingidis equalised for the Greeks. Greek captain Georgios Karagounis saw his penalty stopped in the 71st minute.
