Werder's internationals Zlatko Junozovic and Kevin De Bruyne both celebrated scoring a goal and getting a victory Friday night. In World Cup qualification, Junuzovic scored in Austria's 6-0 win over Faroe Islands in Vienna while De Bruyne found the back of the net in Belgium's 2-0 triumph in Macedonia.

In Austria's unchallenged victory, Junuzovic (scored to make it 4-0) and Marco Arnautovic both played the entire match while Sebastian Prödl did not enter the contest. With the win, Austria retained their chance in Group C.

De Bruyne (scored to make it 1-0) celebrated both a 2-0 win over Macedonia as well as the lead in the standings in Group A. Aleksandar Ignjovski and the Serbian national team lost against Croatia 2-0 and are just about out of the running for the World Cup. Ignjovski however played 75 minutes. Greece and Werder defensive ace Sokratis lost 3-1 against Bosnia-Herzegovina while defender Theodor Gebre Selassie and the Czech Republic were defeated 3-0 at home against Denmark. And Werder midfielder Mehmet Ekici did not play in Turkey's 2-0 victory in Andorra.

On Thursday, Richard Strebinger and the Austrian U21 national team beat Slovakia 1-0 in Hartberg as the Werder keeper was subbed in after 54 minutes as goalkeeper Samuel Radlinger was sent off with a red card. In the German U20 national team's 2-1 win over Switzerland, Johannes Wurtz was brought on after 34 minutes and Tom Trybull after 67 minutes. The third Green-Whites youngster on the U20 German team, Frank Wormuth did not play.
