The Weser Stadium would play host to two media spectacles in September 2005. Firstly the German national team played a friendly against South Africa which they won 4:2 and Tim Borowski got in on the scoring. Then, on the first match day of the Champions League, Werder Bremen played host to FC Barcelona in a game that was to develop into the biggest media circus in the clubs history. 32 television channels broadcast the game live all over the globe. In the press raea of the stadium, 13 countries were represented by commentators, there were 60 photographers, 85 journalists and 15 radio broadcasters present - more than ever before. Not just in, but also over the stadium was a novelty, a sow called

'Spider-Cam' swung back and forth above the stadium snapping picures of Ronaldinho, Micoud, Deco, Klasnic and Co.

Unfortunately the fairy tale had the expected finish with the Spanish giants winning 2:0 on the night. The home side won a great deal of respect for their determined performance. The second Champions League tie was an even bigger disappointment for Werder in Athens when they were penalised for a slow start and conceeded twice in the first six minute and saw their chances of reaching the knock out stages dwindle.

The Weser Stadium was to remain a central point in Bremen over the next weeks with the Bremen City Marathon being lead directly through the arena.

Werder re-found their form in the Bundesliga with an easy 5:1 away win over Kaiserslautern. Johan Micoud and the K&K strike forced did the business in Dortmund. Klose and Klasnic were then at it again in Leverkusen helping Werder to a 2:1 win.

Probably the stupidest defeat of the season came against Borrusia Mönchengladbach where Werder controlled the tie for 45 minutes, going ahead through Jelle van Damme and then threw it all away thanks to a lack of concentration and an own goal by Frank Baumann. Thomas Schaaf admitted after to having had problems coming to terms with the defeat for months after.

Miroslav Klose's development and place in the hearts of the Werder faithful was honoured when he was voted 'Player of the Season'. The German international earned a place in the WUSEUM and nudged out Ailton.
