Werder Bremen lost to Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at White Hart Lane and with it were eliminated from reaching the knock out stages of the UEFA Champions League and cannot qualify for the Europa League. "Naturally we are disappointed that we were unable to play a better role in the Champions League and play internationally in the new year," said Bremen manager Klaus Allofs. "But I am composed because we kind of expected that today. The heavens were not really smiling upon us. We had to make a number of changes again and Hugo (Almeida) went out this morning."
Sebastian Prödl was also stunned about the premature departure from international football. "I am appalled that we will not be represented internationally next year and it hurts quite a bit," said Prödl. Per Mertesacker was also very frustrated after the final whistle. "It is not a very good evening for us because you have goals for the season and we did not achieve them," said Mertesacker.
Despite the disappointment, the Green-Whites were in unison that "looking over the whole course of the group stage we deserved to be eliminated," as Mertesacker said. "Not only did we get bounced from the Champions League but we did not qualify for the Europa League, but you have to be honest that we would not have deserved it," said Marko Marin.
"We were in a difficult group and were unable to win in the right moment," said Allofs, referring to the first game against Tottenham and both matches against Twente Enschede. "In the first game against Tottenham we certainly had our best performance of the group stage and we could have won the game in Twente with a bit of luck. But other than the first game day we were unable to come up with the performance which we are known for from the past," added Allofs.
