Werder Bremen failed to score a goal for the fourth straight game in losing 4-0 at Schalke on the 13th game day of the Bundesliga. Raul scored a hat-trick for Schalke who also received a goal from Christoph Metzelder. The Green-Whites finished the game with 10 men after Philipp Bargfrede was shown the yellow-red card.
Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf made four changes to his line-up with Clemens Fritz, Petri Pasanen, Philipp Bargfrede and Hugo Almeida started. And the Green-Whites started strong with chances by Almeida in the first minute and Aaron Hunt after 11 minutes. Schalke began to take control of the match and took the lead in the 22nd minute with Metzelder’s header going off the crossbar and bouncing off the back of Werder keeper Tim Wiese. Bremen could not get back into the game and Raul doubled the lead two minutes into injury time, hitting home after Wiese stopped Edu’s free kick, leaving Werder trailing 2-0 at the break.
Bargfrede missed a chance early in the second half and Raul scored his second goal in the 56th minute to make it 3-0 after Per Mertesacker’s poor clearance attempt. And Raul finished off his hat-trick – and the scoring for the day – with his looping goal in the 71st minute for a 4-0 lead. Wiese limited the damage by making two great saves against Klaas Jan Huntelaar in the 80th and 82nd minutes. And Bremen finished the game with 10 men as Bargfrede was given his second warning in the 85th minute.
