As the hype about him grew, Marko Arnautovic asked for understanding that he be allowed to fully concentrate on his training on Norderney. There have not been many interviews with Werder’s new Austrian since then. Now – at the training camp in Donaueschingen –three weeks, four test matches and one bike accident into his time with Werder, Arnautovic sat down for a question and answer session with media members. They experienced a good-spirit young player who was friendly and open in speaking about the past year – about setbacks, mistakes and his new start with the Green-Whites. WERDER.DE was at the table.

about his image as a difficult guy: People just say that. But in order to judge me you have to really know me. I am a very direct and open guy who always tries to make friends. I have built up a very good relationship with my team-mates in the first couple weeks. But it is also so that if I sense that someone wants to do me wrong then all that stuff about the difficult character comes through. Then I may be rude or say mean things. But if something is written about me then it’s only about that part. Make your own opinion of my first and then you can judge me.
about the nightlife in Bremen compared to Milan: I don’t care about that. I don’t need the nightlife any more. I had much too much of that in Milan and Vienna. I am happy that I can be at home with my family in Bremen. That is enough for me.
about his transfer to Werder: I wanted to play more and had a discussion with Mourinho. When he heard that Werder was a top candidate for a transfer he told me that Werder are a good club and that it’s the right location for a new start.
about his status at Werder: When you play at Inter then everyone is a star, a star of their country. There are those kinds of players at Werder as well. But I did not come here to be a star but just to give my best performance. I want to give my all, and achieve everything. I am still young. Werder will not be my final stop.
about his chances of making the starting line-up: Now come the test matches against the strong teams. Freiburg, Santander and Fulham – I will find my rhythm in those games and be at 100 percent for the start against Hoffenheim. We have to play well right at the start.
