Werder Bremen striker Hugo Almeida and the Portuguese national team lost 1-0 (0-0) against European champions Spain in the Round of 16 of the World Cup to bow out of the tournament in South Africa.
David Villa scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute of a game with plenty of highlights and good chances. Hugo Almeida had a strong showing for the Portuguese after being brought on as a substitute in the 59th minute.
Almeida joins Danish international Daniel Jensen as the second of Werder's six internationals to be eliminated from South Africa 2010. The German quartet of Marko Marin, Tim Wiese, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil - who have reached the quarter-finals - are the only Werder players remaining at the World Cup.
