Germany national team coach Joachim Löw on Tuesday night named the 23-player roster which he will take to the World Cup in South Africa. Included in the German team are all four Werder players who were in the provisional roster – Per Mertesacker, Mesut Özil, Tim Wiese and Marko Marin.
The last player to be stricken from the team by Löw and his coaching staff was Andreas Beck from Hoffenheim. The provisional roster had 27 players but after a number of injuries it was down to 24, and Löw had to cut one as he could only take 23 players with him to the finals.
"Our decision was not easy. Andreas worked very hard in the three weeks and trained really well. But he had an up-and-down season and was injured a couple times," said Löw about his decision.
South Africa 2010 will be the first big international tournament with Germany’s senior side for Mesut Özil, Tim Wiese and Marko Marin. Per Mertesacker meanwhile played for Germany at the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship.
