There is only one step left until Berlin. Werder Bremen are in the German Cup semi-finals for the 20th time. And the match will kick off on Tuesday, 23 March 2010 at 8:30 p.m. at Weser Stadium. The German Cup semis are "anything but normal", recalls Werder manager Klaus Allofs. And now the reigning champions take on second division side Augsburg, who are hoping to crown the best season of their history.
"They offer a high quality for the second division," said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf about Augsburg, who are currently second in the second division. Jos Luhukay's team is especially impressive offensively, scoring 54 goals in 27 matches, 21 of them by from striker Michael Thurk. "Attacking, that is their game, they like to do that a lot with their very versatile people. But Augsburg will be taking on an opponent who does not just stand back on defence," said Schaaf. Augsburg's road to the German Cup semis went through Ingolstadt (2-1), Freiburg (1-0), MSV Duisburg (5-0) and Cologne (2-0). But this run should end tonight since Werder would like to defend their title and return to the German Cup final on 15 May 2010 at Berlin's Olympic Stadium.
