Werder Bremen will face off against second division side Augsburg in the German Cup semi-final at Weser Stadium. The other semi-final showdown has Schalke playing at home against record cup champions Bayern Munich. The two winners will face off in the season highlight at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Werder were very pleased about the announcement Wednesday evening.
"This is a very nice draw for us because once again we play in Weser Stadium with a chance to qualify for the final. But this will be a difficult match. We have a lot of respect for Augsburg, who have had some very surprising results this season with some excellent matches. If we play to our potential, then we will be returning to Berlin," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf.
Bremen vice-captain Per Mertesacker also sees a big chance of realising his personal dream of the final in Berlin. "We absolutely cannot underestimate this Augsburg team. Their recent results speak for themselves. They are beating everybody. But we definitely want to reach the final and will get it done," said Mertesacker.
The semi-finals will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, 23 and 24 March 2010. The winners will qualify for the cup final on Saturday, 15 May 2010 in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
