When Werder Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf calls his team together for the first training of the week on Tuesday, 6 October 2009 at 3:30 p.m. he won't find very large of a group. The reason is because 10 Werder players are with their respective national teams this week as the final World Cup qualifiers are played.
Daniel Jensen has trained with Werder for two weeks after recovering from Achilles tendon surgery, but he has yet to play a game this season for the Green-Whites. That did not stop Denmark national team coach Morten Olsen from nominating Jensen for the World Cup qualifiers against Sweden (10 October 2009) and Hungary (14 October 2009). In the game against Sweden, Jensen could face off against his Bremen teammate Markus Rosenberg.
Another showdown of Werder players could be in the Bolivia-Brazil game Sunday night 10 October 2009 as Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno and Brazilian centre back Naldo both left for their respective national teams after Werder's 2-0 away win at Stuttgart.
An overview of the other players on national team duty:
- Tim Wiese, Mesut Özil, Per Mertesacker, Marko Marin (Germany)
- Philipp Bargfrede (Germany U21)
- Petri Pasanen (Finland)
