Werder Miss Out On Win , 1:1 Against Kaiserslautern

First Team

It just wasn't to be. Despite a second half onslaught on the Lautern goal, Werder had to settle for just the one point in their last game before the winter break. After a goalless first half, Carsten Janker put the guests in front with a flying header (49'). From then on the game flowed in only one direction with Werder pushing forward to find the equaliser. Eventually in the 59th minute, Tim Borowski put the sides back on level terms with a wonderfully weighted chip. At the finish, Kaiserslautern were the happier side with a somewhat flattering away point.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf made four changes to the side which won 2:0 in Valencia. Schulz, Magnin and Davala replaced Baumann, Jensen (both with knee problems) and Johan Micoud (back injury). Up front Tuesday nights hero Nelson Valdez got the nod ahead of Greek international Angelos Charisteas.

Werder entered the tie with a great deal of determination. Lautern keeper Thomas Ernst was called into action with less than a minute gone after a Magnin cross found the head of Valerien Ismael but the keeper was equal to the effort. The Green-Whites continued to press and created numberous openings. Firstly Fabian Ernst, after a clever through ball from Davala, was denied with his long distance drive by the Lautern keeper (9'), then Valdez fluffed a sitter (15'). KFC managed to relieve some of the pressure but didn't manage to test the Werder keeper.

Magnin deadly with dead balls

After around 20 minutes the game began to lose its way and was not aided by the constant stop-start situation. Kaiserslautern made the best use of the flailing tempo with Halil Altintop driving a shot from 25 meters but to no avail, a shot which was to be Lauterns only dangerous effort of the first 45 minutes (25'). Once again Werder took up the initiative and increased the tempo just before the break to test the FCK defence. The agile Magnin brought the best out of Wiese replacement Ernst from a free-kick. The resulting corner, again taken by Magnin, caused some panic as Tchato was forced to clear Ismaels well placed header off the line (42'). Almost 40,000 spectators were denied a goal in the first half.

Just minutes after the restart FCK turned the game on its head. Carsten Janker dived in the box to meet a Grammozi cross and put the visitors ahead (49'). Werder appeared unaffected by the surprise set back and immediately got to work on regressing the balance. Some wonderful interaction between Fabian Ernst and Tim Borowski led to the highly deserved equaliser in the 59th minute. "Boro" took on a 1-2 with Ernst and, spotting the keeper off his line, clipped the ball perfectly into the top corner of the net.

Four up front for Werder

Thomas Schaaf raised the stakes by introducing Ivan Klasnic as a third striker. Just four minutes after the equaliser, Petri Pasanen could have put the home side into the lead but again Ernst was on hand to deny Werder. FCK retreated into defence, relying on counter attacks zo ease the pressure. The Green-Whites put all of their proverbial eggs in one basket, throwing a fourth striker into the fray in the form of Angelos Charisteas.

All of this effort was to remain unrewarded, with the German champions pressing and creating late chances through Klose (78') and Charisteas (80') but the final consequence failed on both occasions. Before the end then Paul Stalteri saw red for a harmless tug on Carsten Jankers jersey. That was to be the final scene of a game which saw Werder lacking the often neccessary luck needed to win such matches.
