The first training session of the week saw 12 players missing for the training staff. While Per Mertesacker, Tim Wiese, Mesut Özil, Hugo Almeida, Sebastian Prödl and Petri Pasanen are all travelling with their national teams, Marko Marin and Philipp Bargfrede have been with the German U21 team since Saturday as they head to Kiev where the Valeriy Lobanovsky tournament starts on 11 August 2009.

Besides the internationals on the road, injured players Naldo, Markus Rosenberg, Daniel Jensen and Sebastian Boenisch all missed training as well. "Naldo rode the bike today and worked out in the weight room," said assistant coach Wolfsgang Rolff. Boenisch, Rosenberg and Jensen all completed a running workout. And the U21 European champion Boenisch as well as Naldo are both close to returning to the team. "We cannot exactly say when they will return. We have to wait and see if both can complete the same program or if they can return to the team. Maybe they will come back the day after tomorrow," added Rolff.

On Monday afternoon head coach Thomas Schaaf was also missing. Schaaf is currently with his Bundesliga counterparts at a coaching conference in Frankfurt. The Werder coach is being replaced temporarily by his team of Wolfgang Rolff, Matthias Hönerbach, Michael Kraft and Yann-Benjamin Kugel.
