The German side where overwhelemed by an astonishingly packed Azadi stadium sporting some 110,000 ecstatic supporters. The crowd had filled the gigantic concrete bowl hours before the kick-off and according to the security forces in Iran a further 150,000 fans had made their way to the stadium without tickets and supported their side from outside the arena. The home side started strongly and attacked the German goal from the outset.

After two wasted Iranian corners, the European guests made good of their first corner. It was thanks to some good work by Bernd Schneider that Fabian Ernst was able to put the visitors ahead and notch up his first international goal. The midfielder was called up to replace Torsten Frings who had suffered a knee injury.

The visiting Germans, who had given both Wolfsburgs Thomas Brdaric and Munichs Andreas Görlitz their first start, got lucky in the eleventh minute. Aliresa Nikbahkt was just wide of the mark after some clever work by Ali Karimi.

Although the hosts had a slight possessional advantage it was their German guests who had the best of the goal scoring chances. In the 13th minute Bernd Schneider turned the ball over the bar and in the 22nd minute Werder star Klose failed to beat keeper Ebrahim Mirzapour after a wonderful through ball from Sebastian Deisler.

The home side blew two good chances to equalise close to the end of the first half. Arsenals Jens Lehmann denied both Karimi (40') and Jevad Nekounam (41') as he attempted to take advantage of his being chosen ahead of Oliver Kahn in the German goal.

Coach Jürgen Klinsmann decided against any half-time substitutions and his decision appeared justified after just eight second half minutes. Görlitz went on a mazy solo run before picking out the head of Thomas Brdaric who nodded home to make it 2:0. Similarly to Ernst, this was Brdarics first goal in a German shirt.

Klinsmann gave two further debutants their chance before the end with the introduction of Aston Villas Thomas Hitzlsberger in the 68th minute and shortly afterwards Per Mertesacker from Hanover 96.
