Werder players such as Per Mertesacker knew they had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the game so long.

The quarter-finals on 3/4 March show just how prestigious winning this season's German Cup will be. Besides the under-dogs Mainz 05 und Wehen Wiesbaden, the other names in the draw for this Sunday are Werder, Schalke 04, Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV, VfL Wolfsburg and defending champions FC Bayern Munich. A real highlight is just about certain. But there is one thing atop of Werder's wish list.

"We cannot influence it. But it would be nice to finally get a home match again. Our fans deserve that. So many of them accompanied us once again to Dortmund today," said Thomas Schaaf. And the head coach apparently in my mind that 12 of Werder's 16 cup matches since Bremen won the title in 2004 have been played on the road. Goalkeeper Tim Wiese even went one step further, saying: "A home game against Mainz 05 would be nice."

Besides being drawn an attractive opponent, Werder fans also will hope their keeper is still in top form like in Dortmund. Tim Wiese played a major role at Signal Iduna Park in Werder advancing to the quarters. After just five minutes, Wiese made a sensational stop on a header by Alexander Frei from just four yards out. And he later cleared more top chances by Dortmund. "That's why a keeper is between the posts. You have to stop the odd shot," reacted Wiese to the praise from his team-mates. "I always try to give my best and was able to make some good stops today. But the whole team was very strong today. We all know what we messed up in the first half of the season."

Werder fans would also gladly see the trio of Hugo Almeida, Claudio Pizarro and Diego once again be as dangerous in the next round. Almeida's fine left-foot shot was the equaliser. "Everything went so quick. I got the ball and knew that I was just about in the middle of the area in front of the goal. So I turned and shot." Right on, Hugo!
