Werder midfielder Mesut Özil has been placed amongst the final candidates for September’s ‘Player of the Month’ award by the captains of the Bundesliga’s 18 clubs. In spite of having an injured knee, the 19 year old hammered home late on against 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday to make the final score 5-4. It was a goal to mark the end of a very turbulent month for Werder Bremen, and above all, for Mesut Özil.

The moment’s he will surely most fondly remember will include his stunning strike past Michael Rensing in the legendary 5-3 win over Bayern Munich, closely followed by his brace against 1899 Hoffenheim. With three goals to his credit and a total of four assists, Mesut Özil is currently one of the Bundesliga’s top three players and a deserved candidate for the September ‘Player of the Month’ award. The 19 year old winger faces tough competition though from Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrick Helmes and Hoffenheim’s Vedad Ibisevic. The poll is organised by ‘Kicker Sport Magazine’, TV sport channel DSF and the German Football League (DFL).
