Women’s World Football Champion Linda Bresonik had the task of drawing the pairings for their second round clashes in the DFB Cup, and she set Werder Bremen up with a trip to Saxony. On 23rd/24th September 2008, the Green-Whites will travel to third division FC Erzgebirge Aue, who just hours before the draw were beaten 2-4 by Werder’s U23 reserves in a league game watched by Thomas Schaaf. “We got a chance today to see that Aue won’t be an easy opponent. To add to that there is the fact that they will go about things differently. It will be a totally different game and one they will have nothing to lose in,” explained Schaaf after the draw. Having been relegated from the second division last season, Aue are currently second from bottom of the new third division.

Martin Harnik, who got on the score-sheet making it 2-1 against FCE, remarked: “They are a very, very strong, physical team and a DFB Cup game in front of their own fans is not one that can be compared to today’s match. They will present themselves very differently and we will need to be prepared for that,” said Harnik. The 21 year old is convinced that, in spite of the ‘Veilchens’ currently very dissatisfying place in the table: “Aue belong in the third division. By the end of the season they won’t have anything to do with the relegation battle.” For the first time since the 1998/1999 season, all top flight sides have made the second round of the competition.
